| Weekend fun: 6-26-00
I'm feeling all special now because I got the cutest letter from one of my students... she's this incredible artist, and she always decorates her letters with adorable drawings. Her art always makes me smile! This past weekend was fun. We didn't do anything major, but we had a lot of little fun things to keep us occupied. We went to karaoke on Friday, which was a total blast now that Michiru and I are pretty much over our colds. We sang Britney Spears... er... I mean... I sang Britney Spears!! (Michi won't admit to it. ;) ) And we sang some Sailor Moon songs of course, as well as Utada Hikaru and Morning Musume. We are determined to master their new single, "Happy Summer Wedding!" The lyrics go very fast, but we will do it. :) Gosh, I love J-pop. On Saturday, we didn't do a whole lot, but went out shopping a bit, and had shaved ice, which we just love. Then I made okonomiyaki for dinner, which I always enjoy. It's my favourite Japanese food, so I am really glad I learned how to make it this year! On Sunday, we had plans to go to Tokiwa Park by bus... but we were evilly thwarted by a mean bus driver. :P I had never taken that bus line before, and I wanted to be absolutely sure we would be getting on the right bus. So when the bus got to the platform, I checked its number, but the numbers were in the process of scrolling down from 50, and I was looking for bus 13. So we would have to wait till it finished scrolling to see if it really was the correct bus. Meanwhile, I went on board and asked the driver if that bus went to the park. He was like, "Well, it doesn't go in the park..." Umm, thanks, typical Japanese vagueness! I figured he meant it was the correct bus, but wanted to wait for the numbers to stop scrolling- just in case. Well, we stood in front of the bus, watching the numbers, and as they were scrolling down to about 16, 15, 14... suddenly, the doors closed in our faces, and the bus pulled away! And as it went, I could see the scrolling numbers neatly stop at 13. OF COURSE. I swear, my mouth pretty much dropped to the ground at that. I could not believe he left when it was so obvious that we were trying to make sure it was the right bus! But... whatever... I guess God was telling us it was too hot to go to the park anyway. Or something. :P I was seriously appalled with that bus driver... but it was actually pretty funny at the same time. So we went back towards my place, and ended up taking a little walk in the quaint neighbourhood behind my apartment building. Then we decided to lounge around in my air-conditioned bedroom and play on the computer for a few hours. It was quite silly and fun. That evening, we went to a farewell party for another English teacher who has been living in Ube. It was pretty fun, and we got to eat the most incredible cream puffs known to man. Yum! So, that was my weekend. Not much is happening this week... all my classes have been cancelled due to midterm exams, so I am sitting in the office. I have a day off on Wednesday, so hopefully we can do some sightseeing then. I am really enjoying my last few weeks in Japan... of course, all the same, a little voice in the back of my mind keeps saying, "Home! Home! Home! Home!" Ahhhh, I can't wait. :) |
