A feast: 6-16-00

Hello hello, another entry just a day after I wrote the last one! Amazing. Well, I am sitting at a school, in the teacher's room, with very little to do... I taught first period, and my next class isn't until fifth period, so... I thought I'd be productive and write something here!

Last night, we had this incredible dinner. The nice woman that I give English lessons to invited Michiru and I out for a Japanese dinner. Of course, we have both eaten Japanese food before, many times... but I have to say, this meal was unlike any I had ever eaten! It was a feast. The restaurant was simple, yet elegant- very traditional Japanese style. Each party of guests sat in their own private tatami room. When we arrived, the food was already arranged beautifully on the table, waiting for us. It was mostly seafood- sashimi, and an array of other small treats I can't name. I was so happy to get a chance to eat so much seafood, because this area is supposed to have really wonderful, fresh seafood, being on the coast, and I just love anything from the sea. But since it's a little on the pricey side, I don't often indulge. So this was a real treat for me!

Everything was delicious. Then, the waitress brought some soupy sort of dish, which is actually sort of had the consistency of custard, made of egg, but wasn't sweet. It was just a mild flavour... eggy, I guess! Anyway, it was warm, and had various bits of food mixed in, like shrimp, mushroom, and so on. Delicious. After that, we were given some refreshingly cold noodles, delicately fried tempura, and a type of tofu that we cooked ourselves. It was so interesting! We each had a little pot containing some kind of liquid soy, with a flame underneath. The waitress lit the flame, and the liquid would come to a boil. We poured some other liquid in it to make it solidify, and when it was done, we could spoon it out of the pot and eat it warm with some tangy sauce. It was soooo good! The meal was followed by a dessert of fruit and dango (a type of flour dumpling).

Everything was just incredible, and it was probably something we never would have gotten to experience if someone hadn't invited us. It's wonderful how people are so thoughtful here... they want us to experience as much Japanese culture as possible during our stay. It's just so... nice!
