More everyday thoughts: 6-8-00

The rainy season supposedly started in my area about a week ago, but so far it's been sunny and beautiful every day! I'm sure it won't last for much longer though- it's bound to rain soon.

I am so excited, my friend Michiru arrives in Japan tomorrow! We're going to spend the weekend in Tokyo, and then come back down to Ube. I don't know how much time I'll have in the next few weeks to keep track of this diary, but hopefully I'll get to catch up at least a few times.

I had a fun day today, at one of my favourite schools. As I arrived in the morning, they were playing "New York, New York" on the school loudspeakers as they do every morning- a bizarre choice, I think, but fairly perky! The kids were genki as usual, shouting "harro" to me in the halls.

Yesterday was a good day too. It was my last day at one of the schools, so I got a few little presents from some teachers. It was so sweet of them. I got a Hello Kitty mug, because everyone knows I like Hello Kitty. (my school shoes and school bag are Hello Kitty... and pink, of course!) I also got a book about Japan's history and geography, which is quite nice, but its cover makes me laugh... the book bills itself as desribing Japanese history and culture in a simplistic way, easy enough for foreigners to understand. Ummmm, thanks! *laughs and shakes head* But it really is a nice book. :)

I went to a concert of Mexican music the other day, with the nice lady I give English lessons to. She had an extra ticket, so she invited me. It was quite nice, and rather nostalgic... it made me think of mariachi bands in Mexican restaurants at home. But this group actually sang in Japanese part of the time- it was very interesting to hear Mexican music sung in Japanese! Their encore was the best... they started out playing a song that everyone expected to be "Hernando's Hideaway," but when they started singing, the song turned out to be "Dango San Kyodai," which is a popular Japanese children's song about three dumpling brothers, sung to essentially the same tune as the aforementioned "Hernando's Hideaway." It was totally hilarious!

Anyway, time to pack for Tokyo! Yay!
