Not good: 1-30-00

I feel sick right now, and sure as heck isn't the flu... I am angry and upset, on behalf of a friend. I don't wish to tell the details, because that's not my place... all I will say is that something bad happened to make a friend of mine, a fellow JET, feel threatened, and there is nothing she can do to ensure that there will be any consequences toward the person who made her feel that way. In America, she would take legal action and the person would very likely be punished in some way. Here, she will take legal action, and nothing will get done. It makes me want to scream! How frustrating this must be for her. It just goes to show, Japan is not perfect...it's not some kind of fantasy-land, devoid of crime. Living here can be a great experience, but bad things can happen too. I am having a lovely time, and I think my friend was too, up until this point.

The facts say that Japan is one of the safest countries in the world, and it's been my experience that this is indeed a very safe place to be. But it's certainly important not to get lulled into a false sense of security.
