Let it snow: 1-20-00

Well, never mind what I said about the weather being warmer than it was last month... the predicted snow arrived yesterday, and the temperature inside my apartment dropped from 52 degrees Farenheiht to 44 degrees yesterday. And before those of you in snowy regions even think of scoffing, do note that I said INSIDE my apartment! Due to the fact that Japan doesn't see a need for central heating for housing, I get that wintery feeling inside and out.

I am surviving, somehow. I bundle up and make good use of my kotatsu and my kerosene heater. :)

Anyway, despite the cold, it was pretty neat to see snow yesterday. I was in the middle of teaching, when I looked out the window to see white flakes swirling about in the air... I was excited, but I couldn't make my fascination too obvious, since it would distract the students from their class. The snow was light at first, but after a while, there was more and more of it, until the scene looked like one of those miniature snow-globes, with snowflakes whirling around and around. The wind was quite strong, so the snow was blowing every which way. However, the weather never got cold enough for the snow to actually stay on the ground; each flake would burst into a small puff of white powder upon contact. I am told that maybe next month, when it is colder, we will have snow that stays on the ground.

Today is just as cold as yesterday, but not snowing. I think if it's going to be this cold, it might as well snow. Hmph.

I have an ikebana lesson tonight, and no plans for the weekend as of yet. Tomorrow is my boyfriend's birthday, but I am not able to spend it with him, so I am feeling down about that. Living in Japan is so great, but it makes me sad when I'm missing the important times back home. Everything has its ups and downs, I guess!
