Summer's end: 8-26-99 Summer vacation will be over soon, and I’ll be teaching before I know it! I will probably miss the lazy days at the Board of Education office, but I do get bored sitting there with nothing to do, day after day- so I am looking forward to school starting. I have met some school kids around Ube already and they seem so genki and eager to talk. I know they won’t all be like that, but anyway, I think I will enjoy teaching. I haven’t done anything major since I last wrote, but there are always little things to make the days entertaining. My supervisor, Tanaka-san, just cracks me up. Today we had an English seminar, and afterwards there was a small party… we were talking in a group and it came up that Peter (my fellow JET) and I like anime. I said I liked Sailor Moon because it was easy to understand, and Tanaka-san turned to me and started singing the show’s theme song! I joined in, of course. It was hilarious! Truly a unique moment, sitting in the middle of a beer garden, singing the Sailor Moon theme song with a middle aged man. This weekend, he is taking Peter and me up to an art museum in Hagi to see a special exhibit of ukiyo-e. I’m excited, because when I went to Hagi a couple weeks ago, the exhibit wasn’t up yet. Afterwards, we are going to Tanaka-san’s house for a “tempura party,” as he calls it. In other words, his wife is going to teach me to make tempura! How kind! I may not get as much time off as some JETs- some of them haven’t worked at all this month, whereas I go into the office every day- but I think I am really lucky with my placement and my supervisor. It will help make my year (or more) really enjoyable. I think I will only stay for a year, but I’m not sure yet. I have a while to decide. It is nice here, though. |
